Cox Street Redevelopment Project Update

Works are continuing to progress on the Hamilton Cox Street Redevelopment Project with Powercor and Telstra roadside boring nearing completion. Installation of temporary solar street lighting is anticipated to be finalised by the end of the month, remaining in place until permanent lighting is connected.

The NBN contract, which is funded within the project budget, was awarded at Wednesday night’s ordinary Council meeting with NBN works set to commence immediately.

Heavy vehicles are reminded to continue to use the Heavy Vehicle Detour as water main works scheduled for the start of July will lead to a full closure of the Gray Street/Cox Street roundabout between Sedgwick Street and Clarendon Street. Local businesses will have managed access with the closure anticipated to take approximately one week (weather permitting).

Further updates with confirmed closure dates and traffic management details will be provided in the next Council update.

Heavy Vehicle detour signage has also now been installed to assist heavy vehicle drivers navigate the re-route.

Upon entering Hamilton, drivers are advised to follow:

  • From Coleraine Road: Mount Baimbridge Road, Portland Road, South Boundary Road, Mt Napier Road, Petschels Lane, Hamilton Highway and Ballarat Road.
  • From Glenelg Highway: Hamilton Highway, Petschels Lane, Mt Napier Road, South Boundary Road, Portland Road, Mount Baimbridge Road and Coleraine Road.
  • From Hamilton Highway: Petschels Lane, Mt Napier Road, South Boundary Road, Portland Road, Mount Baimbridge Road and Coleraine Road.

Jointly funded by Council and the Victorian Government, the project has an overall budget of $4.6million and will improve the Ballarat Road entry of the CBD by undergrounding existing power lines, installation of new Telstra lines (east side only), addition of a new median strip with street lighting, new pavement (east side only) and a 3m wide footpath.
