Our play a vital role in reducing the added hardship country cancer patients face, by providing accommodation and support services close to treatment centres in Perth.
In the 2020/21 financial year, 4943 cancer patients and their carers stayed at one of our Lodges while accessing treatment in Perth.
Our Adopt a Room program enables members of the public to financially support a room at our Crawford or Milroy Lodge for a year to ensure this vital support is available
In June 2020, Ruth and Neville Thorn adopted room SU4 at our Crawford Lodge and they recently shared with us their thoughts on the program.
What inspired you to Adopt a Room?
We have lived rurally for many years and understand that it is often difficult to get to Perth and find accommodation. We put ourselves in the shoes of a country person going through cancer treatment. If we were sick, where would we go? What would we do?
From trying to answer those two questions, it was clear to see that cancer patients would suffer the most. That’s when we asked to get involved as we wanted to help take some of the extra pressure off the shoulders of people experiencing cancer. Ultimately, we believe in the cause to help stop cancer.
How did you find out about the program?
We have always supported the work that Cancer Council WA does and found out about the Adopt a Room program from reading Cancer Council WA’s Newsletter. We loved the history of the Lodges and wanted to find out more on how we could help.
What do you think of the program so far?
We love the program and promote it to everyone we know. Recently, we even had friends stay in our adopted room and we didn’t even know until they messaged us.
We believe that this is a great initiative and an essential service. For country people going through cancer treatment, the Lodges take the mental stress away as there is often a big financial burden associated with receiving cancer treatment.
Both Lodges have a relaxed atmosphere with all necessary facilities. There is even a Transport to Treatment bus which helps those who don’t want to drive on the busy city roads access their treatment. This is one of the many things provided at the Lodges that help alleviate the stresses of going through cancer.
Thank you, Ruth and Neville, for your continued support!
