After receiving concerns from residents of Hill Top about the youth in their community being bored and lacking activities, Council and community organisations collaborated to find a solution. They also recognised the potential to rejuvenate the Hill Top Community Centre and use it as a means of connecting the young people in the area.

In partnership with Wingecarribee Shire Council and Community Circles, River Road Creative Academy has developed a series of drop-in sessions to help stimulate young minds. With Hill Top being relatively remote, these types of opportunities are not readily available to young people, without having to travel further afield.

Patrick Nellestein, Director of River Road Creative Academy said “It is great to see that Council are keen to get behind these issues and fund programs like this that are so beneficial to the wellbeing of these young people.”

These Drop-in sessions at Hill Top Community Centre will run every Friday night during Term 3, from 28 July to 22 September 2023. Youth aged 12-18yrs will be welcomed into an inviting and inclusive space where they’re free to explore music and creative arts.

A range of musical instruments will be available, along with photography, film making and urban and visual art activities.

“Giving our young people a positive outlet for their energy and a chance to expand their knowledge can have a profound impact on their future. An opportunity like this can change the course of a life,” said Corinne Buxton, Wingecarribee Shire Council’s, Coordinator Community Development.

This community-led initiative aims to connect young members of the community in a way that inspires them to discover new talents and find a supportive network of friends.

“We’re looking forward to seeing individuals channel their boredom-fueled creativity into positive endeavours. It’s exciting to imagine what they’ll come up with!” said Corinne.
