Moira Shire Council hosted newly appointed Cross Border Commissioner, Brett Davis, on his visit to Cobram on Wednesday 27 March. The collaborative approach taken by Council resulted in representatives from the Moira, Berrigan and Campaspe shire areas taking the opportunity to discuss the unique challenges and opportunities facing border communities.
The forum, initiated by Moira Shire Council, saw attendees including Moira Shire Council’s CEO and Panel of Administrators, Berrigan Shire Council’s CEO, the Mayors of Campaspe and Berrigan shire councils, Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy MP, the CEOs of NCN Health and Yarrawonga Health, local Victoria Police representatives, members of Yarrawonga Mulwala Business and Tourism and Cobram Barooga Business and Tourism, and local industry leaders.
Chair Administrator John Tanner AM introduced the new Commissioner, highlighting that Commissioner Davis has worked in local government as a CEO in regional Victoria and has a strong understanding of the needs of rural and regional communities. With his background and expertise in planning, Commissioner Davis brings great value and experience to his position.
Commissioner Davis presented to the forum, explaining his background, the role of the Cross Border Commission, and his arrangements with the NSW Commissioner before addressing questions on topics including water buybacks, the Yarrawonga Mulwala Bridge, levee banks along the Murray River, health services, and the sharing of facilities across the border.
Mr Tanner said that he welcomed the Commissioners visit to the region.
“We were delighted that the Cross Border Commissioner accepted our invitation to attend this forum in our region. In many ways, we are one community with shared interest on both sides of the border,” said Mr Tanner.
“By working closely with Commissioner Davis, we will continue to advocate for the issues affecting our communities and ensure that we are aligned with the objectives of the Commission to make it easier to do business cross borders. We aim to find innovative solutions that benefit our border communities. Through engaging in discussions and fostering collaboration, we aim to progress towards resolving some of the challenges impacting our area.”
