Filled with over 125 recipes ideal for special gatherings and parties, CROWN STREET CELEBRATES™ is the much-anticipated sequel to CROWN STREET COOKS™, a fundraising cookbook published by the parents of Surry Hills’ Crown Street Public School in 2010. It became a local ‘best seller’ with more than 7,000 copies sold to date. Celebrating the school’s 170th birthday, the new publication will be released 1st November 2019, in time for holiday-season entertaining.
Inside, over 200 beautifully photographed pages teem with treasured family recipes for irresistible savoury snacks and dishes, flamboyant cakes and exotic desserts, plus festive cocktails contributed by talented home cooks and budding mixologists within the Crown Street community, including teachers, parents and even students. And since this is Surry Hills – Australia’s drinking and dining mecca – the book also features a star line-up of locally based chefs and innovative bartenders, sharing their exclusive favourites in support of the school. Their names present like a roll call of Australia’s top culinary talent: restaurateurs Maurice Terzini and Bill Granger, plus chefs Dan Hong, Danielle Alvarez, Colin Fassnidge, and the late Jeremy Strode, a much-loved Crown Street dad.
We’re not only investing in the local community with this cookbook, but its future. These kids are its most important asset.
Colin Fassnidge, Chef and TV presenter.
Curated by acclaimed chef Jane Strode and bar owner Jeremy Blackmore (both Crown Street parents), CROWN STREET CELEBRATES™ includes recipes from The Dolphin Hotel, Hotel Harry, Bills, Poly, Alberto’s Lounge, Fred’s, Don Peppino’s, Spice I Am, Belles Hot Chicken, Bad Hombres, El Loco, Butter, Bar Ume, Jillian’s Cakery, Epic Pizza, Formaggi Ocello and The Essential Ingredient, plus drinks (a newly introduced chapter) from Tio’s Cerveceria, Scout, Dead Ringer, Bartolo, Shady Pines Saloon and The Wild Rover.
Flavours span the globe, from Japan, Thailand, China and Mexico to the borders of Europe including Spain, Ireland, Turkey and the Nordic countries, inspiring bursts of experimentation in the kitchen. Most importantly, these recipes encourage social get-togethers, the generous sharing of food and lively discussion around the table and picnic blanket, or under a web of carnival lights.
I’m thrilled to be involved in the second edition of the school’s cookbook fundraiser, sharing a cosy recipe that I like to cook for family and friends at home. This book is a true celebration of the brilliant Surry Hills locals, and the supportive and vibrant, food-loving community we, at Bills, couldn’t live without. Bill Granger, Bills
CROWN STREET CELEBRATES™ will retail for $45 (incl. GST) at designated Surry Hills businesses and selected bookstores. Copies can also be pre-ordered and purchased online at: crownstreetcelebrates.com.au

Additional background:
Crown Street Public School’s iconic main buildings, a neighbourhood landmark, opened with great fanfare in 1879. The school itself was established in 1849 to educate the children of convicts and other settlers. Today, it proudly educates some 300 primary students from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds.
The stretch of Crown Street traversing Surry Hills, from Oxford Street to Cleveland Street, is one of the most densely populated eating strips in the country, and easily the most written about. The hospitality businesses along this stretch are many and varied, including internationally lauded restaurants, ethnic eateries, gourmet grocers, plus eclectic bars and local pubs. Not only do they nourish and entertain our school community, but many have generously supported Crown Street Public School’s fundraising endeavours over the years.
Crown Street Celebrates™ is proudly supported by the following businesses:
