Education Minister Grace Grace has officially opened an $11.6 million learning centre at Currimundi Special School.
Ms Grace toured the new facility today while on the Sunshine Coast for the Palaszczuk Government’s Governing From the Regions program.
“It’s great to see first-hand the difference that this learning centre has made to students and staff at this wonderful school,” Ms Grace said.
“The centre features an additional 13 general learning areas, with the project also making way for a new bus set-down area, upgraded staff car parks and the relocation of the school’s bicycle training track.”
Ms Grace said the state-of-the-art centre created 31 full-time jobs during construction.
“Annastacia Palaszczuk’s number one priority is jobs. The Palaszczuk Government is taking action across the state to boost our economy and ensure that its Queenslanders that benefit,” Ms Grace said.
“That means building the infrastructure our schools need to ensure they can continue to provide a world-class education for our students.”
Currimundi Special School Principal Alwyn Green said the school community was wrapt with the new facilities.
“We are thrilled that these new spaces will help us to continue to deliver cutting edge educational opportunities, while catering for the differing learning needs of our students,” Mr Green said.
Ms Grace said the Palaszczuk Government is proud to be investing in school infrastructure on the Sunshine Coast.
“The Government has poured more than $236 million in Sunshine Coast schools over the past five years in capital works, maintenance and school infrastructure enhancement,” she said.
Key Sunshine Coast school projects being funded by the Palaszczuk Government include:
- $34 million Baringa Primary School, Caloundra South
- $11.6 million for additional classrooms at Currimundi Special School
- $16.4 million multi-storey learning centre at Mountain Creek State High School
- $7.8 million for additional classrooms at Brightwater State School
- $7 million for additional classrooms at Nambour Special School
- $17.9 million for a multi-storey learning centre and additional classrooms at Chancellor State College
- $4.9 million multi-storey learning centre at Meridan State College
- $5 million multi-storey learning centre at Kawana Waters State College
- $4.6 million two-storey learning centre at Maroochydore State High School
- $6.9 million two-storey learning centre at Sunshine Beach State High School
- $14.9 million multi-storey learning centre and additional classrooms at Coolum State High School
- Caboolture Special School (to open in 2020)
Key Sunshine Coast school projects in the planning stages include:
- $60 million secondary school in Caloundra South (to open in 2021)
- $35 million primary school in Palmview (to open in 2021)
- A special school on the Sunshine Coast
