Innovative research at the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority has produced a world-first blue kangaroo paw (anigozanthos masquerade) that is now available to be purchased by Western Australians at local retailers.
It is the result of more than ten years of research and development by breeders at Kings Park.
True blue flowers are rare in native plants and the development of the kangaroo paw required controlled cross-pollination over years between green and red-and-green varieties.
The new hybrid comes in three variants of different colour intensities and shades cocktail, fireworks and masquerade.
The blue kangaroo paw has been developed to be disease tolerant to ink-spot and rust – common issues affecting the plants species’ survival. It is hoped the new variant will encourage locals to put more native vegetation into their gardens.
The kangaroo paw (anigozanthos) is an evergreen perennial endemic to WA’s south-west.
As stated by Environment Minister Reece Whitby:
