Cycling complex works rolling along

Progress works at the new Multi Sport Cycling Complex at Pomingalarna Reserve are now 80 per cent compete and on target for completion by early next year.

Construction on the BMX track has started and work towards finishing the criterium track and its three loops continues at a solid pace.

The final asphalt top on the 333-metre velodrome is expected to be laid next week and will add to the completed elements of the cycling park which include the pump and jump tracks, the education park and mountain bike trails.

Light towers around the velodrome and along the criterium track have also been installed with final fit-out of the community building underway.

Council’s Strategic Asset Planner Ben Creighton said conversations are already taking place with cycling organisations towards planning of events at the new complex.

“We have worked closely with the Wiradjuri Women’s Group and cycling stakeholder groups from day one. The input and feedback from all groups has been positive,” Mr Creighton said.

“This project will not only cater for those type of events but is a facility that will be open to the general public for use.

“We’ve already opened up sections of the park, including the jump track and pump track, and those elements are getting a real workout these school holidays.

“We continue to get positive feedback from the community and that is encouraging. The facility we are building here has enormous community benefits, as well as the potential to bring new events to the city which is great for our local businesses and the economy.”

Council Project Manager Tom Lemerle said the project was on schedule for practical completion by April next year, weather permitting.

“Asphalt for the velodrome and criterium track is the next major construction milestone. These works are ground temperature and wet weather dependant and are scheduled to be complete in the coming weeks,” Mr Lemerle said.

“Stakeholder engagement and consultation has been a big focus of this project, yielding some fantastic results to date, and will continue to be very important to the project team as the project is completed.

“It’s definitely an exciting project which will tie in with the Active Travel shared pathway project that is also being rolled out at the moment … there’s some great development happening across the city right now.”
