More beef produced by Queensland Indigenous cattle owners could soon land on dinner plates around the country with help from the Palaszczuk Government.
Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said Department of Agriculture and Fisheries officers have been working with the Woorabinda Pastoral Company in Central Queensland to find ways of developing high-end beef products.
“The company wants to eventually supply these products to various markets such as ‘Blackfella Beef’, a food label co-operative designed to market indigenous produced red meat products,” Mr Furner said.
“In the last few months staff have provided training to Woorabinda Pastoral Company workers focusing on cattle nutrition, reproduction and health.
“They’ve also looked at the company’s paddocks to work out ways to improve pasture growth and grazing management.
“DAF agricultural economists are working with the managers on developing a business plan so that the company can make its dream of producing high-end products a reality.”
The Woorabinda Pastoral Company is owned by the Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Council and runs cattle on 47,000 hectares across seven properties in the Fitzroy Basin.
“Through the company, the Council is providing significant opportunities for indigenous employment and skills development,” Mr Furner said.
“This is another example of how we are investing in innovation so our state’s indigenous farmers can be the best in the world.”
