Darwin City Street Set For Green Makeover

Darwin City Council

Works to green part of Cavenagh Street will soon commence, with a successful candidate appointed this week to undertake greening and cooling enhancements.

Mousellis and Sons – a Darwin-based, family owned and operated business – has been awarded the contract for the Cavenagh Street Greening project, which will involve landscaping the median strip from Knuckey Street to Searcy Street.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis he was looking forward to seeing an avenue of shade trees planted in this pocket of the city centre, extending on works previously funded and delivered by City of Darwin.

“We are going green to keep the city cool. Greening our municipality continues to be one of our top priorities and we expect to plant more than 4,500 trees this financial year,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“This project is a further commitment towards our vision for Darwin’s future as a liveable and tropical capital city,” he said.

In addition to seeing more trees planted, the Cavenagh Street Greening project will include converting three parking bays into motorcycle parking spots and future-proofing the design for the addition of bike lanes.

The project is part of City of Darwin’s Better Suburbs Program, which aims to improve the amenity of Darwin and deliver projects that are based on direct engagement between the community and our Elected Members.
