Today marks the beginning of the 34thDarwin Pride Festival, four days of celebrating the Northern TerritorysLGBTQIA+ communities.
On this day in 1985 a group of passionateDarwinites came together to create the very first Darwin Pride Festival tocelebrate the Northern Territorys rich diversity and provide opportunity topromote equality and respect for LGBTQIA+ Northern Territorians.

In March 2018, the Northern Territory Government amendedthe NT Adoption of Children Act toenable de facto and same sex couples to have the legal right to adopt childrenin the Northern Territory.
This year also coincides with the 50thanniversary of the Stonewall Riots, a series of spontaneous and sometimes violentdemonstrations against police raids in New York City in 1969. These riots arecredited as being a catalyst for the gay and transgender rights movement in theUnited States and across the globe and a galvanizing force for LGBT politicalactivism.
Darwin Pride Festival events and activities will runfrom Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 September 2019.
