Darwin’s cyclone clean-up moves to Zone 2

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin’s annual Pre-Cyclone Clean-Up shifts its focus to Zone 2 on Monday 26 September.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said, while the clean-up is primarily about getting Darwin ready for the cyclone season, it is also an opportunity to recycle materials which might otherwise end up in landfill.

“Our clean-up teams collected more than 600 tonnes of waste during last year’s clean up,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“It was encouraging to see that 37 per cent of all material collected last year was diverted from land fill at Council’s Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility, including 130 tonnes of scrap metal and 75 tonnes of white goods.

“There were 12.5 tonnes of e-waste left on verges last year, which was double the amount of 2020.

“City of Darwin is focussed on better practice resource recovery, recycling and waste management. And our pre-cyclone clean-up certainly assists in that regard.”

City of Darwin clean-up teams found more than 360 prohibited items left on verges during the Zone 1 collection, including car parts, glass, liquids, gas bottles and food waste.

Mr Vatskalis also reminded seniors and residents with mobility limitations they could request assistance to remove items from their property as part of the pre-cyclone clean-up process.
