In the lead up to the celebration of women across the world, City of Darwin, in collaboration with the United Nations Association of Australia NT Division and the NT Government, is set to host a spectacular International Women’s Day Walk on Saturday 2 March 2024.
Featuring a feast of entertainment, including superheroes, Kool Kats on roller skates and surprise guest performers, the annual walk will be enjoyed by people from all genders, ages and communities.
City of Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the walk was going to be bigger and better than ever and encouraged locals to attend.
“This year’s International Women’s Day aims to bring together people from all walks of life to think, act, and be gender-inclusive,” Mr Vatskalis said.
“The walk will be led by the Darwin City Brass Band and promises to be an immersive experience which celebrates the incredible achievements of women worldwide.
“We are lucky to have had Dr Ella Stack as the first female Lord Mayor of an Australian capital city, and the first Lord Mayor of City of Darwin, in 1979 when Darwin became a capital city.
“International Women’s Day is a reminder of the progress made by women such as Dr Stack,” he said.
There will be a range of entertainment options available, including information stalls, a free community BBQ, food vans and performances by Sarah Marion, SAM’s Dance Studio and Tracks Dance as well as face painting and the Fun Bus.
International Women’s Day is recognised annually on 8 March and this year’s theme is Invest in women: Accelerate progress.
Attendees are encouraged to wear purple and bring banners, as well as hats and water bottles.
