- David van Ooran takes over from Claire Wright as Perth Zoo Executive Director
- Mr van Ooran boasts previous experience at WA Museum and Tourism WA
- Appointment follows $51 million investment by the Cook Government in major upgrades to Perth Zoo
David van Ooran has been appointed Executive Director of Perth Zoo, succeeding acting Executive Director Claire Wrightin the role.
Mr van Ooran has extensive experience across local and State Government and has previously held leadership positions at WA Museum and Tourism WA.
His appointment comes at the same time as Perth Zoo seeks to implement the next stages of its 20-year Master Plan, which has already benefitted from a $51 million investment by the Cook Government.
That funding supported the opening of a new caf, playground, and function centre, with construction of new gibbon habitat due to commence in May.
As stated by Environment Minister Reece Whitby:
“I would like to congratulate David van Ooran on his appointment and thank Claire Wright for her tenure.
“Perth Zoo is one of Western Australia’s most iconic and beloved locations, last year attracting nearly 800,000 visitors.
“Having previously supported major upgrades at the zoo through a $51 million investment, the Cook Government has shown good conservation outcomes can be achieved while supporting outstanding tourism experiences.”
