The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has commenced Exercise Austral Shield 2024 around Derby in Western Australia, Darwin in the Northern Territory, Cairns in Queensland, and Christmas Island, to practice its ability to defend our region and rapidly deploy to Australia’s north.
The exercise enables the ADF to contribute to the collective security of the Indo-Pacific through a persistent presence in Northern Australia and ability to project power and deploy forces into remote areas.
Exercise Director, Brigadier Damian Hill, AM, said the scenario requires the rapid response of full-time and ADF Reserve personnel from 2nd (Australian) Division to form Joint Task Force 629.
“This will comprise of security and response forces from the 13th Brigade, 11th Brigade and Regional Force Surveillance Units, who will deploy as part of an integrated Joint Task Force alongside other air and maritime assets,” Brigadier Hill said.
“The ADF’s contribution to Exercise Austral Shield supports our shared vision of a peaceful region and makes a meaningful contribution to collective security.
“The nature of Exercise Austral Shield means local residents in these locations are likely to see increased military activity in their community.
“In order to get the most realistic training for our people, we will be using public areas and residents may observe simulated weapons fire or military vehicle traffic.
The public is encouraged to watch any of these activities, however we ask that they keep a safe distance and abide by directions from local authorities.
Exercise Austral Shield 2024 will conclude on 28 July 2024.
