Defibrillators in Local Seniors Centres: Bayside

In a bid to enhance public safety, Bayside Council has taken a proactive step by installing defibrillators at seven (7) local senior centres as part of its comprehensive public facilities risk management plan.

Mayor Dr. Christina Curry, while highlighting the significance of this initiative, assured the public, “These devices are extremely user-friendly and straightforward to operate, ensuring that anyone can use them effectively during emergencies. Once activated, the user receives instant voice prompts to guide them through the necessary actions.”

However, it’s essential to understand that the new defibrillators do not replace the vital role of CPR in emergency situations.

Mayor Curry emphasized the importance of following the DRS ABCD first aid treatment action plan:

  • D – Danger: Assess the situation to ensure the safety of both the victim and rescuer. Check for any potential hazards.
  • R – Response: Attempt to elicit a response from the victim. Tap their shoulders gently and ask if they are okay.
  • S – Send for Help: Call triple 000 (emergency services) immediately to request professional medical assistance.
  • A – Airway: Ensure the victim’s airway is clear and unobstructed. Tilt their head back gently and lift the chin to open the airway.
  • B – Breathing: Check the victim’s breathing. Look, listen, and feel for any signs of breathing for about ten seconds.
  • C – Compressions: If the victim is not breathing or only gasping, begin performing chest compressions. Push down hard and fast in the centre of the chest at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
  • D – Defibrillation: If an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is available, switch it on and follow the voice prompts provided. Apply the defibrillator pads to the victim’s bare chest as indicated by the device.

Mayor Curry further stressed, “CPR is a life-saving measure that can significantly increase the chances of survival. Therefore, it is crucial to initiate CPR immediately in an emergency before professional help arrives.”

The council’s investment in installing these AEDs aims to enable experienced members of the senior centres to provide immediate assistance to cardiac patients while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

These portable AEDs are user-friendly and designed to deliver a controlled electric shock to restore the heart’s rhythm during sudden cardiac emergencies.

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) have proven to be instrumental in saving lives when used correctly in conjunction with CPR.

By incorporating the DRS ABCD first aid action plan and having access to defibrillators, Bayside Council is taking significant strides towards ensuring the safety and well-being of its community members.
