Dementia prevention focus of Seniors Week 2021 in Launceston

Seniors Week 2021 City of Launceston

Director of the Dementia Research Centre at the Launceston General Hospital, Dr George Razay, will present the latest findings in dementia prevention as part Seniors Week 2021 information sessions in Launceston this week.

Dr Razay will join community groups across the municipality as part of the City of Launceston’s Seniors Week morning tea program to discuss his research in the field, diagnosis and treatment of normal pressure hydrocephalus, a treatable form of dementia that is often missed.

The study is the first world-wide to report that the condition is more common than has been previously thought, and that at least 15% of participants with memory problems may have the condition.

Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the annual Seniors Week morning tea is an important way to connect with seniors living in Launceston and to have a meaningful discussion about the important issues that impact them.

“We’re able to hear from our community about what is most important to them as residents of our great City, and what we can do to help connect them to important services and facilities in Launceston,” Mayor van Zetten said.

“Having Dr Razay join us as this year’s guest speaker will help to share invaluable insights within our senior communities about the latest in dementia research and most importantly, prevention.”

Dr Razay said he is using every opportunity possible to speak to different community groups to share this research and its findings.

“People may have a member of the family who they believe is losing capacity due to dementia or memory problems,” Dr Razay said.

“They just accept it as part of the aging process. They may think there is nothing they can do.

“It’s important that families know that at least 15% of patients with memory problems or dementia may be incorrectly diagnosed, and that their symptoms are treatable and reversible.

“I encourage you to come and listen to one of my talks, to find out more during Seniors Week. The presentation will include case studies and video presentation.”
