The Civic and State Square masterplan is becoming a reality with demolition works commencing of the Chan building.
The State Square overhaul is a critical part of the historic $200 million Darwin City Deal, delivered in partnership with the Australian Government and the City of Darwin.
This is a significant CBD revitalisation project, and will ensure the Territory is ready for the coronavirus rebound.
More than 50 Territory jobs will be supported during this project.
As part of the deal, Darwin’s Civic and State Square precinct will be revitalised to create cool, green spaces for the whole community to enjoy through activated spaces.
Demolition of the Chan building is the next step of the State Square overhaul that has already seen the completion of the underground car park and landscaping underway.
There are a number of City Deal projects ready to start or out for public tender or about to be released, which includes:
– Charles Darwin University City Campus;
– Austin Lane Revamp; and
– State Square Art Gallery.
The priority of the Territory Labor Government is to support local jobs throughout the coronavirus pandemic and to help businesses get ready to rebound as soon as we can.
The Chan Building demolition is set for completion by the middle of the year.
As stated by the Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler:

“The Chan Building demolition will create over 50 local jobs and support many local businesses. With Civic and State Square tenders currently out shows this project is real and the jobs are coming.
“Seeing the Civic and State Square Masterplan come to life is further cementing the Territory as the capital of Northern Australia, and a great place to live and visit.”
As stated by Member for Port Darwin, Paul Kirby MLA:

“We are cooling the Darwin CBD and making it more attractive place to visit and do business.
“It is our priority to support Territory businesses by creating more local jobs and boosting the number of visitors coming into our CBD when we are able to welcome them again.”
