A VCAT hearing on objections to the Dendy Street Beach life-saving pavilion has concluded, with Council now awaiting a decision.
This follows Heritage Victoria’s approval of a slightly revised design to the pavilion. The Dendy Street Beach precinct is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and any proposed works must be approved by Heritage Victoria. Approval was granted following a minor change to the proposed design of the life-saving pavilion to address sight lines along the iconic beach.
Bayside Mayor Cr Michael Heffernan welcomed Heritage Victoria’s decision.
“Heritage Victoria’s approval is in line with Council’s view that the new life-saving pavilion will complement the heritage precinct while providing vital facilities for our life savers and improving the experience of all beach users,” he said.
Council is also continuing to work with the EPA to resolve soil contamination discovered during site assessments for the pavilion project. Council has complied with all obligations under a Clean Up Notice issued in June 2018.
The EPA has issued follow up Clean Up Notices – one for the pavilion redevelopment site, the other for a broader section of the foreshore and beach.
Council will continue to work with the EPA to develop a management plan for the pavilion site to address any necessary soil contamination management.
The Clean Up Notice for the broader foreshore and beach area requires Council to conduct an assessment to determine what, if any, action is required and provide a report to the EPA.
Cr Heffernan said that Council is working cooperatively with the EPA on the requirements of the new Clean Up Notices.
“We will meet all actions as required and can assure the community that the area is safe to visit,” he said.
