The Alice Springs CBD Revitalisation plan has taken a significant step forward with the release of the design tender.
The Territory Labor Government is investing $20 million to reinvigorate and create a safer and more vibrant Alice Springs CBD for locals and visitors to enjoy.
Through this investment, $15 million has been allocated for CBD revitalisation projects, and $5 million towards the Breaking the Cycle of Youth Crime plan.
The revitalisation of the Alice Springs CBD focuses on four major initiatives:
o Heat Mitigation to create a cooler more comfortable walking CBD using a combination of strategically located and connected shading and landscape initiatives to encourage and extend pedestrian activities within the CBD during the heat of the day.
o Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) to create a safer CBD through a spectrum of integrated design initiatives including improved lighting, identified safe zones and a more inviting, well-designed streetscape to improve the appeal of the CBD after hours.
o Kwatja (Water) Play Space to build a safe, shaded, educational play place incorporating water splash elements for children of all ages to broaden the appeal of the CBD for families.
o Car Parking Review to review the current and future needs for car parking in the CBD.
The initiatives were identified by the Inland Capital Committee, a joint Territory Government and Alice Springs Town Council initiative. Two sub-committees were formed to progress the initiatives and are chaired by the Alice Springs Town Council.
The revitalisation projects will complement the Governments suite of Alice Springs CBD investments which include the Live Alice Mparntwe Arts program, the Alice Springs Street Art Festival, extension of Parrtjima Festival into Todd Mall, and the establishment of Alcoota Megafauna Central.
Following the release of todays design tender, construction tenders for the project elements will be released in the second half of 2019. All projects are expected to be completed by early 2020.
As stated by Member for Braitling, Dale Wakefield
The Territory Labor Government is doing everything it can to attract visitors to our CBD, which creates jobs and boosts the local economy.
A vibrant CBD is also a safer CBD. That is why a crucial part of our investment is on the Breaking the Cycle of youth crime in Alice Springs.
The four Alice Springs revitalisation projects will breathe life into the CBD with exciting possibilities through science, art, and activities. Our vision is for a cool, safer, and more modern Alice Springs the Inland Capital of Australia.
