Residents can dispose of household chemicals for free at Sustainability Victoria’s ‘Detox Your ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾’ event on 17 September at the Kyneton Saleyards.
The ‘Detox Your ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾’ service allows residents to safely dispose of toxic household chemicals such as weedkillers, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, cosmetics, and cooking oil. These household chemicals are harmful to the environment and should not be placed in kerbside bins or poured down sinks.
Each ‘Detox Your ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾’ event collects around four tonnes of hazardous chemicals, keeping them out of landfill and waterways, allowing them to be recycled where possible, and helping to protect the environment.
Common chemicals that can be disposed of include:
- Fuels and flammable liquids – turpentine, methylated spirits, petrol, kerosene, diesel, paint thinners
- Garden – herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, poisons
- Household – cleaners, bleach, ammonia, oven cleaner, solvents, cooking oil, cosmetics, fire extinguishers
- Car – wax, transmission fluid, body filler, brake fluid
(Note: Paint is not accepted at Detox Your ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ events. You can take unwanted household paint to a permanent drop-off site. For locations, visit )
Expert chemists will be on hand to identify and sort the chemicals for safe transport back to a licenced processing facility for reuse or safe disposal.
Macedon Ranges Shire Council is hosting the ‘Detox Your ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾’ Kyneton event, continuing Council’s commitment to reducing the waste going to landfills. The team is working proactively to provide initiatives and resources for the community, assisting people to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Detox Your ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Kyneton takes place from 9 am–12 pm, Saturday 17 September, at Kyneton Saleyards, 87 Saleyard Road, Kyneton. Registrations are essential, and spaces are limited.
