Devonport City Council Takes Action to Restore Grassed Areas at Bluff Headland Amid Vandalism and Hooning Concerns

Devonport City Council Tasmania

In response to recent incidents of vandalism and hooning that have caused damage to the grassed areas at the Bluff Headland, Devonport City Council is taking to address the issue and restore the grassed sections. Council staff will be undertaking essential works in the coming weeks to rejuvenate and protect this iconic community space and its wildlife.

The Bluff Headland has long been a treasured destination for both residents and visitors, offering breathtaking views, recreational opportunities, and a natural sanctuary within our City. However, the recent surge in destructive activities, including vandalism and hooning, has posed a serious threat to the landscape’s integrity and the safety of our community and wildlife.

To combat these challenges, Devonport City Council has developed a comprehensive concept plan. This plan aims to rehabilitate the damaged grassed areas and enhance the overall experience for all who visit this picturesque location. The concept plan includes sustainable landscaping practices, increased security measures, and the introduction of recreational features to deter any future anti-social behaviour.

“Council remains fully committed to preserving the natural beauty and functionality of the Bluff for the enjoyment of present and future generations.” Devonport Mayor Alison Jarman said.

The forthcoming works will encompass the installation of timber bollards and raised garden beds to restrict vehicular access to grassed areas and improve the amenity, deterring any potential incidents of vandalism and hooning, mainly between Tiagarra and the Lighthouse. Future work such as roadside footpath linkages and a viewing platform are proposals that will be considered and progressed under future budgets.

“We kindly request the support and cooperation of the Devonport community during the implementation phase. These measures are crucial to ensure the longevity and safety of this cherished public space, and together, we can preserve the Bluff Headland as a pristine and inviting destination,” Cr Jarman said.

As we move forward with these vital restoration works, Devonport City Council assures the public that Council remain dedicated to preserving the beauty and environmental integrity of the Bluff Headland, ensuring that the iconic landmark continues to be a source of pride and enjoyment for all.
