The Rockliff Liberal Government is backing Tasmania’s racing industry and the thousands of jobs it supports.
Minister for Racing, Felix Ellis, said today’s Devonport Cup kicks off the major carnivals series and provides an important social and economic boost for the North-West Coast.
“The Devonport Cup is run for prizemoney of $125,000 with $75,000 going to the winner and it is great to see the crowds supporting the event,” Minister Ellis said.
“The meeting also hosts the richest sprint race on a synthetic track in the country with the Ladbrokes $109,000 Carpet Charge.
“After a successful launch in 2023, local sporting clubs again had the opportunity to get involved and win a portion of $25,000 prizemoney in the Ladbrokes Community Sports Series.
“The Ladbrokes Community Sports Series run at Devonport today allowed all North-West sports clubs to apply with 12 clubs selected in a live draw and now in the running to walk away with a top prize of $10,000 if their allotted horse wins.
“In fact, the series was so successful and popular in 2023 that it has now been extended to include races at the Launceston and Hobart Cups.
“Patrons will also see the progress of the new $3 million raceday facility supported by a Liberal Government election commitment which is due to be completed in the middle of this year and will be a major upgrade for racing in the region.
“The Tasmanian racing industry generates about $208 million and is vitally important to the State, especially the 6400 jobs it supports in regional Tasmania and the passion and social interaction it generates in the racing community.”
Minister Ellis said racing is part of the Tasmanian way of life for many people and the summer racing carnival series is a major highlight enjoyed by thousands.
