Disability access and inclusion advocates needed for Georges River Council Advisory Committee

Georges River Council

Do you have lived experience of disability or want to improve accessibility and inclusion for people with disability in the Georges River area?

Help create a fairer and more inclusive community that reflects the diversity of Georges River and provides universal access to Council services by joining Georges River Council’s Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee for 2024 and 2025.

Expressions of Interest (EOI) to join the two-year Advisory Committee are now open, with ten members needed to provide feedback and advice to Council on its Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) and how service delivery to people with disability can be improved.

Applications close 31 January 2024.

Georges River Council Mayor Sam Elmir encouraged anyone who is passionate about accessibility and equal access for people with disability to get involved.

“This is an opportunity to help improve the day-to-day lives of people living with disabilities in Georges River and create a better and more inclusive community for us all,” Mayor Elmir said.

“Joining the Advisory Committee offers a unique opportunity to directly impact policies and practices that make our community more accessible and inclusive.

“Georges River Council is committed to ensuring that every resident has equal access to Council services and opportunities. Our goal is to create a community where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can fully participate.”

To apply, community members can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) that outlines their community background, any relevant experience living or working in Georges River, why they wish to become a member, and that identifies any important issues they believe the Advisory Committee should seek to address.

Members of the Advisory Committee will be appointed for a period of two years from 2024-25 and elect a Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson annually. Meetings will be held online quarterly via Microsoft Teams.

Advisory Committee members’ responsibilities include attending quarterly meetings, participating in an orientation workshop, providing advice to Council, and liaising with community networks.

“As a two-way information exchange, the Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee is a forum for raising issues of concern and making recommendations to Council on the needs and priorities of people with disability, their carers, and their families,” Mayor Elmir said.

“The advisory committee also serves to celebrate the achievements of people with disability in Georges River.”
