Joint media release with the Hon Ann Leahy MP
Balonne, Maranoa, Paroo and Quilpie Councils can now access disaster funding from the Albanese and Crisafulli Governments for response and recovery efforts in the wake of recent flooding.
Support has been made available under the joint Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) and will cover counter disaster operation expenses incurred, emergency repairs, and the reconstruction of essential public assets.
Severe thunderstorms and heavy rains have plagued the region since late November causing significant damage to the region’s road network, with reports of more than 350mm water having flowed over some roads.
Flood warnings were also issued for the Warrego, Paroo, Weir, Lower Barcoo and Upper Balonne Rivers.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management Jenny McAllister said the disaster assistance activated today will help the community clean up and recover from recent storms and flooding.
‘Local infrastructure plays a critical role in keeping communities connected and safe, particularly for regional communities. This assistance will support councils to reinstate these assets and get recovery underway swiftly,’ Minister McAllister said.
‘We are working closely with the Queensland Government to ensure communities can get the support they need as they get back on their feet.’
Queensland Minister for Disaster Recovery Ann Leahy said even western councils like Maranoa, Paroo, Balonne and Quilpie were not immune to the impacts of storms and flooding.
‘Activation for financial assistance as a result of floods has been a regular occurrence since February 2020 for all four of these council areas,’ Ms Leahy said.
‘DRFA assistance will again support these councils’ efforts carrying out crucial road repairs and counter disaster actions that protect residents.
‘Through the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA), our government will continue to monitor weather impacts across the state and respond quickly for Queenslanders.’
