Disaster Support For Scenic Rim Council

Department of ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Affairs

Joint media release with the Hon Ann Leahy MP

Disaster assistance is now available to support the Scenic Rim Regional Council’s response and recovery efforts following a week of heavy rain and flooding in the region.

Sustained rainfall in the Scenic Rim area has resulted in severe landslips and substantial damage to several major roads including Knapp Creek Road south of Kooralbyn.

With the activation of the jointly funded Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), council can access financial support for the reconstruction of essential public assets and counter disaster operations.

This includes the extraordinary expenses associated with immediate response and community recovery, and costs associated with emergency repairs and the reconstruction of damaged roads.

Federal Minister for Emergency Management Jenny McAllister said the assistance activated today would support impacted communities to recover after the storms.

“This joint support will help Scenic Rim Regional Council clean up, reinstate critical assets and ensure community safety.

“We know that communities will stand together in difficult times, and the Albanese and Crisafulli Governments will stand with them also.

“I’d like to commend the work of first responders who have had to brave difficult conditions to help their communities.”

Queensland Minister for Disaster Recovery Ann Leahy said the Scenic Rim region has shown tremendous resilience in the face of repeated disaster events.

“In recent years the beautiful Scenic Rim region has been scarred by bushfires, floods, and destructive storms,” Ms Leahy said.

“Through it all, council and residents have demonstrated great community spirit.

“Today’s announcement of disaster assistance for Scenic Rim Regional Council will help rebuild roads and protect residents, allowing the community to overcome this latest round of wild weather.”
