A man disqualified from driving has been charged and a knife has been seized, following a pursuit on the state’s south coast yesterday.
Just before 12.30pm (Wednesday 20 July 2022), officers attached to Southern Traffic Group Moss Vale were stationary on Kalandar Street, Nowra, when they observed a Mitsubishi SUV travelling east bound. Checks revealed the vehicle was reported stolen on Saturday 16 July 2022 from a Nowra address.
Police followed the SUV to Greenwell Point Road and attempted to stop the vehicle, before the driver allegedly drove from location along Old Southern Road.
A pursuit was initiated, where the SUV was detected allegedly travelling at 80km/hr in a 50km sign-posted area in the streets of east Nowra, before it struck a gutter at the intersection of Kameruka Crescent.
The vehicle came to a stop near the Vendetta Street intersection.
The driver – a 31-year-old man – allegedly fled on foot along Clipper Road; however, was arrested after a scuffle with police in the backyard of a nearby home.
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police located and seized a knife next to the driver’s seat.
Subsequent checks revealed he was a disqualified driver.
The man was taken to Nowra Police Station where he was subjected to oral fluid testing, which returned an alleged positive detection to methylamphetamine; the results of which will undergo further analysis.
The man was charged with drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period – second offence, police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly, and custody of knife in public place.
He was refused bail to appear in Nowra Local Court today (Thursday 21 July 2022).
