Distracted driver caught speeding in the Riverland, South Australia

A man has been fined for speeding at Yamba today.

Just after 9am on Monday 24 December, police detected a Toyota sedan travelling east on the Sturt Highway at 76km/h in the 60km/h zone of the Yamba Fruit Fly Inspection Station.

Police observed the driver had his mobile phone open on a website on his leg at the time.

The 59-year-old from Mildura was issued with an on the spot fine totalling $833 and three demerits.

Police remind all motorists to drive safe particularly over the holiday period. Operation Safe Holidays, which began on 15 December sees police focused on the five key factors which contribute to road fatalities and serious injury crashes each year. The factors, commonly called the Fatal Five, are:

* Speeding

* Drink or drug driving

* Seatbelt use

* Dangerous road users

* Distracted drivers

Police know that changing driver behaviour in relation to these factors will lower the road toll, and the number of serious injury crashes that have such a terrible impact each year on South Australian roads.
