Docklands transformed into magical playground

Colourful unicorns, a giant platypus, a troupe of circus performers and an inflatable whale will take over Docklands these school holidays, with the return of the hugely popular pop-up activation for kids – The Playground.

The interactive, family-friendly experience will be split into three creative zones stretching across the New Quay precinct for four days from Thursday April 21.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp said the free event will bring the Docklands precinct to life with colour and activity.

“Across four wonderful days, The Playground will fill Docklands with vibrant street performers, face painters, interactive experiences, carnival rides and delicious food,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Last year’s event attracted more than 20,000 people and contributed hundreds-of-thousands of dollars to the local economy, and we’re hoping this year is even bigger and better.

“Whether you dream of dancing with unicorns, or just enjoy the silliness of a clown, there is something on offer for everyone at The Playground these school holidays.”

Highlights at The Playground in 2022 include:

  • Unicorn Garden: Join Kittycorn, Rainbowcorn, Funkicorn and their fairy friends in a Unicorn playground like no other, with marshmallow trees and princess seats.
  • Circus Street: Visit the Great Disappearing Tunnels of Fire or try your hand at the Amazing Balancing Act in these fully interactive, circus-themed performances.
  • Yarra River of Giants: Clamber to your hearts content over giant Yarra River creatures, Pam the Platypus, Murray the Cod and Eleanor the Short-Finned Eel.
  • NERF Fun: Hone your NERF skills and battle it out for glory with your friends at this hands-on activation, with all toys and safety equipment provided.

City Activation portfolio lead Councillor Roshena Campbell said Docklands traders had been disproportionately impacted by COVID restrictions but The Playground would drive much needed visitation.

“The Playground was an incredible success for our Docklands businesses in 2021,” Cr Campbell said.

“Across the area we saw a significant bump in activity, with each person who attended The Playground spending an average of $55 on shopping, eating and drinking

“What better way to help support our Docklands traders than by bringing the whole family down for a day of free events along the beautiful New Quay Promenade.”

The Playground will run each day between 10am and 6pm and is best suited for children aged 4 to 12 years old.
