An enclosed off-leash dog park is set to be constructed at Churchill Reserve following a lengthy community and stakeholder consultation effort by Council.
Benalla Rural City Mayor said the construction of dog park at Churchill Reserve represents the culmination of an important process of listening to the community and finding a solution that benefits everyone.
“While the Churchill Reserve Committee of Management initially did not support the proposal to allow off-leash dogs in the reserve, this location had been identified during community consultation as the preferred location,” Cr Hearn said.
“Working closely with the Committee of Management, a compromise was reached, enabling the construction of a fenced dog park within the reserve.
Councillors were pleased to endorse the proposal at this week’s Council meeting, some six months after community consultation via the online Have Your Say Benalla platform officially closed.
“The decision comes after careful consideration of community feedback, highlighting the need for a safe and enclosed area where dogs can exercise and socialise freely,” Cr Hearn said.
“Council looks forward to the positive impact this facility will have on dog owners and their furry friends.”
The approved design includes fence around the perimeter, two airlock style gates for safe entry and exit, three bench seats placed for views of the dog play areas, a water station with dog water bowl underneath, and two tunnel and mound constructions to enhance the dogs’ sensory experience.
Multiple entry/exit points will minimise congestion and facilitate smooth entry. Bench seating will be strategically placed to avoid congestion and encourage owners to stay connected with their dogs.
With a budget of $100,000 allocated in the 2022/23 Capital Works Program, construction is set to commence shortly.
