Halloween is just around the corner, and while some of the foods we love can be absolutely delicious, the influx of sweet treats can spell trouble for your pets. We want to ensure your pups enjoy a safe and spooky season without any sugary scares.
Here are a couple of sweet treats that are an absolute no-go for dogs this Halloween:
1. Chocolate
Why It’s a No-No: Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs. Even a small nibble can lead to vomiting, seizures, or worse!
2. Lollies
Why It’s a No-No: Sugary little treats can cause dental issues, obesity, and upset tummies when large quantities are consumed. Plus, their bright colours can be misleading-your dog might think they’re tasty treats when they’re not! Lollies contain Xylitol which is a sugar substitute found in lollies and is extremely toxic for dogs. It can cause hypoglycemia which can result in weakness, vomiting and seizures.
3. Pumpkin Spice Everything (Without the Pumpkin)
Why It’s a No-No: Many pumpkin spice goodies contain artificial sweeteners and other ingredients that can upset your dog’s stomach or be outright harmful.
4. Sticky Caramels
Why It’s a No-No: Sticky sweets can lead to choking hazards or blockages in your dog’s digestive system. Not to mention, the high sugar content isn’t great for their health.
Paws for Safe Halloween Practices
1. Secure Your Sweets: Keep all candies and chocolates well out of reach of curious noses and paws.
2. Dog-Friendly Treats: Offer your pup some dog-safe treats to make them feel included in the festivities.
3. Avoid Dressing Your Pet in Costumes: Alhough they may look cute, costumes can be restrictive and compromise your pet’s welfare. If you want your pet to join in the Halloween spirit, buy them a themed toy instead.
This Halloween, let’s make sure the only things your dog is chasing are shadows and maybe a friendly ghost or two-not harmful sweets! If you suspect your furry friend has indulged in something they shouldn’t have, contact your local vet immediately.
Stay safe, have fun, and give your pup an extra treat (the dog-friendly kind) for being such a good boy or girl!
