Geological Survey of Victoria scientists will be on hand at Sungold Field Days to talk about the unique geology of the south west.
Geologists, hydrogeologists and land use specialists will be able to provide insight into the structure of the Otway Basin as well as the unique land features, groundwater chemistry and resources of the region.
The star of the show is a marquee cinema featuring 3D projections of local geology that will help viewers to better understand what’s under everyone’s feet.
The 3D show runs on the hour for around 30 minutes and is suitable for farmers, students, community members and whoever else rocks up.
Water testing will be available so if you want to know more about the groundwater at your place, bring along a sample for analysis.
The marquee cinema is part of the Victorian Gas Program, which is conducting comprehensive geoscientific, land resource and environmental studies to better understand the region’s potential onshore conventional gas resources.
The results of the Victorian Gas Program’s studies will help inform future decisions about onshore conventional gas, which is under a moratorium until mid-2020.
Geological maps and local rock samples will also be on display, along with a land resource model of the south west region.
The land resource model has been developed from over 140 authoritative data sets. It identifies areas of sensitivity and significance that may need to be considered if the onshore conventional gas moratorium ends in 2020.
The Sungold Field Days are taking place at Allansford from 12 to 14 February, visit the Geological Survey of Victoria’s marquee located at site A3 on Cracker Barrel Avenue.
The Geological Survey of Victoria is the state’s geoscience agency.
