Draft Housing Strategy on public exhibition: Ballina Shire

Draft Housing Strategy on public exhibition

Ballina Shire Council has prepared a Draft Housing Strategy to help meet housing demand over the next 20 years in Ballina Shire.

“The Draft Ballina Shire Housing Strategy 2024 identifies gaps in housing supply and explores Council’s role in planning for and encouraging housing that meets our community’s needs,” said Council’s Manager Strategic Planning, Paula Newman.

“The strategy outlines 23 actions for Council to implement over the next 20 years to encourage more available housing.”

Four key principles will guide these actions:

  • Make housing available to local workers and residents.
  • Encourage diverse housing sizes and types.
  • Encourage walkable neighbourhoods with smaller dwellings located close to shops and services.
  • New homes resilient to natural disasters and housing stress.

“The housing system is complex involving a multitude of factors from macro-economic policies including interest rates and tax settings through to the rise of online holiday rental platforms. Landowners, developers, State and Federal Governments, Community Housing Providers and local communities are all part of the housing supply system,” added Ms Newman.

“This Housing Strategy recognises that no single organisation can resolve the complexity of local housing issues, however, Council can work in partnership with key stakeholders, take the lead on advocacy initiatives, and ensure planning controls contribute to good housing outcomes.”

Council undertook a range of community consultation activities, including an online survey and face-to-face workshops, to inform this Draft Housing Strategy.

Council is now inviting community feedback on the Draft Strategy. To provide feedback visit

Submissions close Friday 15 March 2024.
