A learner driver has been arrested after being stopped twice in as many hours for traffic offences.
About 3pm on Saturday 21 March, a Murray Mallee Highway Patrol stopped a Nissan Coupe on Dukes Highway at Coonalpyn after being clocked travelling at 78 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, who only held a learners permit was lacking a qualified supervising driver and failed to display ‘L’ plates. He was issued with a $1328 fine and his car was defected.
Approximately two hours later the same patrol spotted the same vehicle, with the same driver, travelling on the same highway at Coombe. The patrol followed the vehicle travelling in excess of 140 km/h in a 110 km/h zone. The driver was seen to overtake other vehicles on double lines before he came to a stop.
The driver, a 29-year-old man from Mount Gambier, was arrested and charged with two counts of breaching his learners permit conditions, driving contrary to defect, speeding and overtaking when unsafe. He was bailed to appear in the Murray Bridge Count on 14 April.
