Drivers remain critical following four-vehicle crash, NSW

A police officer and a woman remain in a critical condition following a four-vehicle crash in Sydney’s south yesterday.

The crash happened about 2pm (Thursday 31 January 2019), when a Honda Civic travelling south on Heathcote Road, about 1km from New Illawarra Road, Lucas Heights, collided with a Toyota Yarris and Honda Jazz in the northbound lanes.

The Jazz was then struck in the rear by a Mitsubishi Triton, also travelling north, before the Triton collided with the Civic.

The driver of the Jazz, a 29-year-old male probationary constable attached to Liverpool City Police Area Command, was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Liverpool Hospital.

The driver of the Civic, a 65-year-old woman, was also extricated and taken to Liverpool Hospital.

They both remain in a critical condition.

The driver of the Yarris, a 63-year-old man, the driver of the Triton, a 19-year-old woman, and her passenger, an 18-year-old man, all escaped injury.

The drivers were both taken to Sutherland Hospital for mandatory testing.

Heathcote Road was closed for six hours while officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit examined the scene.

Investigations are continuing.
