Drone carrying drugs at Stuart

Police are investigating a drone that was located within the grounds of Townsville Correctional Centre (TCC) in Stuart on November 11.

The Mavic Pro Drone was found after an attempt to fly drugs into the Townsville Correctional Centre.

Police believe the drone crashed around November 9. The drone was located on the grounds during patrols by TCC officers.

The drone was carrying quantities of methylamphetamine, tobacco, cannabis as well as 617 suboxone strips with a total value of approximately $250,000.

A light-coloured utility was seen near the facility at the time of the incident.

Investigators have released vision of the light-coloured utility and are seeking assistance from the public for information regarding the drone flight or the vehicle.

General Manager of Townsville Correctional Complex Chief Superintendent Louise Kneeshaw said attempts to introduce drugs into correctional centres endangered the safety and security of prisoners and staff.

Chief Superintendent Kneeshaw praised the work of QCS officers in identifying the potential threat to the centre.

“With new laws set to come in, the act of flying a drone over a correctional centre can cost you time in custody.

“Our officers work tirelessly every day to the protect the safety of the community and this contraband find is a testament to that commitment and capability.”
