Drone trial to help NSW beachgoers be shark aware this summer

Great White Shark

Eighteen beaches stretching from Kingscliff to Pambula will be a part of the trial commencing 21 September, in a collaboration with Surf Life Saving NSW.

In a previous trial, surf lifesaving (SLS) drones made 8000 flights over more than 25000 kilometres, to observe approximately 350 sharks. NSW beaches were cleared of swimmers on 48 occasions.

NSW Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall said the drone trials will enhance the existing capability of lifeguards and lifesavers, by increasing public protection from sharks and other beach hazards.

“We know drones are the future when it comes to keeping beachgoers safe,” Mr Marshall said.

The drone trials will complement other trials of the NSW Shark Management Strategy this swimming season, including SMART drumline trials at Ballina, Evans Head, Newcastle and Sydney.
