NT Police conducted an operation last week targeting the secondary supply and sale of liquor in the Katherine region.
Officers from the Katherine Divisional Support Team, Northern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk and the Dog Operations Unit conducted an operation on the nights of Thursday 15 October and Friday 16 October on the Stuart Highway north of Katherine.
Drivers were subjected to breath and drug testing. Vehicle were also searched. The operation resulted in:
- 87.5 grams of methamphetamines seized
- 164 litres of liquor seized
- 161 grams of cannabis seized.
Several arrests and notices were also issued:
- Two females were arrested and charged with Supply and Possession of a Commercial Quantity of a Schedule 1 Dangerous Drug. Both are currently remanded in custody to appear 23 November 2020.
- One person was arrested for having an outstanding warrant and for fresh offences including Driving with Drugs in Blood, Drive Unlicensed and Possess Thing to Administer a Dangerous Drug.
- Two persons issued with a Notice to Appear, one for a road train driver who tested positive for methamphetamines and the other a drunk driver who returned a reading of 0.118 BrAC.
- Eight Drug Infringement Notices were issued for Possession of Cannabis in a Public Place
- 10 Traffic Infringement Notices were issued which included two for Drive with Drugs in Blood.
Superintendent Daniel Shean said, “Drugs and alcohol continue to cause harm in our community; specifically domestic violence, assaults and social disorder.
“Katherine police are committed to preventing drug and alcohol related harm in our community. Operations such as this, commensurate with other positive prevention and enforcement activities will continue to occur in Katherine. Those that are involved in the unlawful sale and supply of alcohol and drugs can expect to get caught and dealt with through the courts.”
