Drug importation arrest at Gold Coast

Detectives from the Gold Coast Major and Organised Crime Squad have executed a series of search warrants in Southport and Broadbeach targeting the importation of 1,4 Butanediol, a controlled substance under Schedule 6 of the Drugs Misuse Regulation 1987.

During the searches on Tuesday and Wednesday, police seized a large amount of cash, a quantity of 1,4 Butanediol, drug utensils and mobile phones.

1,4 Butanediol, also known as ‘Bute’, can be converted to gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB or Liquid Fantasy).

A 53-year-old Southport woman has been charged with possessing dangerous drugs, supplying relevant substances, possessing relevant substances, possession of property suspected of being the proceeds of an offence under the Drugs Misuse Act and other drug related offences. She is due to appear in Southport Magistrate Court on 16 February 2022.

Major and Organised Crime Squad Detective Senior Sergeant Ian Galpin said 1,4 Butanediol can cause significant harm or even death if ingested.

“In partnership with the Australia Border Force, our investigations have resulted in approximately 50 litres of 1,4 Butanediol, intended for the Gold Coast, being seized.

“The targeted enforcement of individuals supplying and trafficking 1,4 Butanediol is a priority due to the significant harm it causes within the community.

“It is extremely easy to overdose on and its use may lead to death. The difference between survival and a fatal overdose can be very small,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Galpin.
