Drug lab at Walkerston

Investigations continue following the discovery of a suspected drug lab at Walkerston on the weekend.

Around 2pm on Saturday, September 26, police and emergency services were called to attend a grassed area between the Pioneer River bank and a cane paddock at the end of Palms Monument Road to reports of a fire.

Several members of the public had observed the fire and made attempts to extinguish the flames before fire crews arrived to extinguish it.

Upon arrival and examination of the scene officers located two firearms and what appeared to be a suspected methylamphetamine production lab.

A crime scene was subsequently declared for further, more detailed examination.

The crime scene examination also confirmed that the methylamphetamine production lab and firearms remained in tact and preserved from the fire to a sufficient standard to allow forensic examination which has occurred.

As a result of the preliminary police investigation, a number of witnesses were identified and are assisting with inquiries.

Detectives are continuing with their investigations in relation to establishing how the fire started.

Anyone travelling along Mackay Eungella Road and the Peak Downs Highway between 1:30pm and 2:30pm on Saturday that witnessed any suspicious activity or have dashcam footage available to make contact with police or alternatively with Mackay Detectives on 49683533.
