Darwin Dog Operations Unit members have seized a large quantity of illicit substances destined for remote Top End communities.
Drug Detection Dog teams have been very busy during the week with the screening of regional flights and scheduled barge transport companies targeting the illicit distribution of dangerous drugs destined for remote communities.
During the course of the week Drug Detection Dog Diesel has been responsible for the seizure of:
- 902 grams of Cannabis, destined for Palumpa
- 11 kilograms of Kava, destined for Elcho Island
- 545 grams of Cannabis in seven seizures destined for other remote communities
These proactive strategies have resulted in the prosecution of multiple persons for the possession of trafficable and commercial quantities of schedule 2 dangerous drug. All these matters are currently before court.
Investigations are ongoing with some of these matters with an expectation of further chargers to be laid in relation to offences against the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Senior Constable Scott Pearson of the Dog Operations Unit said “We know the supply of illicit substances into remote communities is a catalyst for violence and neglect within family units and NT Police will continue to disrupt that supply at every opportunity.
“Drug Detection Dog Diesel is continuing to prove that he is an asset to Territory as nothing gets past his nose.”
