Due to unconscious bias, many people with a disability face barriers in the workplace. Of the one in five Australians living with a disability, only 54 per cent are employed, which is twice the unemployment rate.
This is what Dylan Alcott and his Foundation want to change, with its ‘Remove the Barrier’ campaign.
It is raising awareness about barriers and working to change perceptions of what employees with disability can achieve. Despite being willing and able to work, people with a disability struggle to find jobs.
The “Remove the barrier’ website provides further detail about the campaign and how you can help. It also features the experiences of people with a disability including Oliver Henry who says, “With disabilities you have to be extraordinary to be ordinary.”
This afternoon, from 1:15pm to 4:30pm, Bayside City Council is hosting a free workshop facilitated by iDareU (Inspiring People with Disabilities through Awareness, Resources, Empowerment and Unity).
