Cannington Detectives have charged a 28-year-old man in relation to an incident in East Cannington on Sunday 16 August 2020, in which an 84-year-old man was seriously assaulted.
Police had been called to the East Cannington area in relation to a series of criminal damage and other incidents linked to two men who were walking in the area.
During the response to those incidents a witness involved in that series of incidents identified a vehicle wing mirror that had been discarded on Henry Street, and which appeared to have blood on it, and brought it to the attention of the attending officers. The officers conducted a search of the area and located a vehicle at a residence further along the street with a wing mirror missing. Further enquiries were conducted at that residence, at which time an 84-year-old man was located with significant injuries. St John Ambulance attended and the injured man was taken to Royal Perth Hospital.
In the following days other offences were identified as being linked. The investigation resulted in the following series of incidents being linked, each occurring in the Cannington, East Cannington and Beckenham area within a short time of each other between 6:30pm and 7:30pm:
– An 84-year-old man being assaulted at his residence on Henry Street, East Cannington
– A man in 20s assaulted (punched) and robbed on Derisleigh Street, Cannington
– A woman in her 40s indecently assaulted on Burge Way, East Cannington
– A woman in her 20s assaulted (struck with a metal sign) on William Street, Beckenham
– Criminal damage offences including:
o Graffiti damage to a park bench on Derisleigh Street, Cannington
o Graffiti damage to a gate on private property on Mallard Way, Cannington
o Graffiti damage to a wall on Railway Parade, East Cannington
o Graffiti damage to a wall on Sevenoaks Street, Cannington
o A brick thrown through a house window, a letterbox damaged, and fence panels damaged on Sevenoaks Street, Cannington
o A letterbox damaged on Henry Street, East Cannington
Yesterday, Thursday 20 August 2020, Cannington Detectives arrested two men as part of an ongoing investigation. A 28-year-old man was arrested in Kelmscott, and a search warrant was executed at his residence in Seville Grove. A 24-year-old man was arrested in Yanchep, and a search warrant was executed at his residence in Armadale.
A 28-year-old Seville Grove man has been charged in relation to the assaults on the 84-year-old man, the man and woman aged in their 20s, as well as the indecent assault on the woman in her 40. He was refused bail and is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court today, Friday 21 August 2020.
A 24-year-old man from Armadale has been charged in relation to several of the criminal damage incidents and in relation to Cannabis, smoking implements, a round of ammunition and a slingshot which it will be alleged was located during a search of his residence. He is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday 15 September 2020.
The investigation into the series of incidents is ongoing and detectives would like to hear from anyone who may have interacted with the two men on the night, or who identified damage to their property in the area that occurred on Sunday 16 August 2020.
