The Gippsland community turned out with excitement and interest for the RAAF Base East Sale open day on October 20 to view the range of Defence and Defence industry capabilities and opportunities available on base.
The crowd was treated to two aerial displays, first from the resident Pilatus PC-21 aircraft used for pilot training, followed by an impressive display from Air Force aerobatics team, the Roulettes, which are also based at East Sale.
Commanding Officer 30 Squadron Wing Commander Peter Ferris said the open day was an opportunity to show the community what happens at the base, in the air and on the ground.
“We had two PC-21 ground displays, along with the King Air and SAR (search and rescue) helicopter, giving visitors the chance to see inside the cockpit, and talk to pilots and aircrew about their role,” Wing Commander Ferris said.
“The ground combat demonstration was popular and I received feedback that the simulated display was a unique experience for attendees.
“The mix of aerial and ground displays gave visitors a real insight into Defence capability, including the potential career opportunities available in the ADF and Defence industry.”
The open day was also an opportunity for some of the pilot and mission trainees based at East Sale to show their parents where they are living and working on base.
“It was great to see our young officer aviation trainees welcome their families on base during the open day,” Wing Commander Ferris said.
“I shared their sense of pride in showing others the work we do as members of the ADF, and how it contributes to our nation’s security.”
Wing Commander Ferris offered thanks to ADF families and the local community for supporting the open day.
“The base is located close to town so locals are very connected to the base and invested in our activities – the folks I spoke to were overwhelmingly positive,” he said.
