Colac Otway Shire Council is delighted to receive $120,000 from the Victorian Government for the resurfacing of six netball courts from asphalt to acrylic, new spectator seating and an accessible drinking fountain for Colac’s Eastern Reserve.
“Sporting facilities are hugely important to the wellbeing of our community and Eastern Reserve is often where young netballers enjoy their first introduction to the sport,” said Mayor Kate Hanson.
The summer netball competition is also a well-loved tradition for netballers who want to keep their skills up over summer, enjoy the social benefits or do winter pre-season training. This upgrade will be a welcome boost to these players and their families and friends who are supporting them.”
The application of an acrylic surface will extend the life of the courts by at least 10 years, and improve the playing surface for the hundreds of netballers who use the courts weekly, year round.
Council will work with the two resident netball associations at the Eastern Reserve to determine the best time for the resurfacing to take place.
Alongside the Victorian Government contribution, Council is contributing up to $50,000 to the project, with the Colac Summer Netball Association and Colac District Netball Association also contributing $10,000 each.
“Council acknowledges the significant contributions from the two resident clubs, which are entirely volunteer-run,” said Mayor Hanson. “Investments into community sport facilities create jobs and help community sport organisations to grow participation – while also encouraging residents to get active and stay healthy.”
