Ecofiesta Shapes Residents’ Views On Sustainable Living

Four-in-five attendees at this year’s Ecofiesta say the event has changed the way they think about their role in protecting our environment.

The findings, from a sample of the 7000 people attending the June event, also showed overwhelming support for the annual initiative which combines practical, hands-on advice for more sustainable living, with inspirational workshops and panel discussions (including renowned science communicator Dr Karl), music, films and children’s activities.

While many of the 400 people surveyed had already made lifestyle changes to be sustainable, almost half indicated they wanted to do more to reduce their waste, a similar percentage said supporting biodiversity was key, and more than a third wanted to further limit reliance on non-renewable energy and fuel.

Funded and organised by Council, Ecofiesta is a community collaboration with 65 community groups, stall holders and organisations taking part, aided by 34 volunteers and in-kind support from James Cook University and Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (CaFNEC).
