Two men who allegedly posed as bank employees have been charged after defrauding an elderly man of almost $5,000 in Sydney’s north-west.
In January 2020, officers from The Hills Police Area Command commenced an investigation after an 86-year-old man reported his bank account had been fraudulently accessed a number of times on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 January 2020.
Following inquiries, a 20-year-old man of an Ashfield address was arrested in Burwood about 10.50am yesterday (Tuesday 3 March 2020) and taken to Burwood Police Station where he was charged with four counts of dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception and refused bail.
He appeared before Burwood Local Court yesterday (Tuesday 3 March 2020), where he was granted conditional bail to reappear at the same court on Friday 17 April 2020.
A second 20-year-old man was arrested later that day at a house on Railway Parade, Burwood, about 3.15pm.
He was taken to Burwood Police Station and charged with nine counts of dishonestly obtain financial advantage and deal with identity information to commit indictable offence.
The man was refused bail to appear before Burwood Local Court today (Wednesday 4 March 2020).
Police will allege in court the two men pretended to be from a bank and notified the man over the phone that his card had be fraudulently accessed. They collected the card and access pin from him at his residence – a retirement village in Castle Hill – before making a number of purchases totalling $4,537.
Investigations continue.
