Election session to inspire new candidates

Shire residents are invited to an online information session about standing for Council at the October general election.

Mayor Neil Trotter encouraged all interested residents to take part.

“The Stand for Council Community and Candidate Information Session will help potential candidates understand the role of a councillor and local government, as well as the process for election,” Cr Trotter said. “It will hopefully encourage community members to stand.

“It is in the interest of a secure and prosperous Shire that talented and passionate people represent their fellow residents.

“It’s important to have candidates with diverse backgrounds and experience to give Council a broader range of perspectives when making decisions. I encourage everyone to think about what they can bring to the table. It’s always good to get a fresh injection of new ideas.”

Cr Trotter encouraged residents to educate themselves and consider serving the community on Council.

“While I have enjoyed the privilege of serving on Council for the past six years, I don’t intend to stand in the next election and I believe some of my fellow Councillors will also not seek re-election,” he said.

“Being on Council is very interesting and rewarding and there’s a terrific sense of satisfaction knowing you’re helping build a secure future for the community.”

“Corangamite Shire has got a reputation for prudent financial management, strategic planning, and vigorous advocacy to State and Federal Government for support in achieving our ambitions for a strong and sustainable future.”

The session, from 7-9 pm on Tuesday 18 August, will provide information about:

  • The role and purpose of local government;
  • The new Local Government Act 2020;
  • Introduction to your council and information on the municipal area;
  • Roles, responsibilities and expectations of a councillor;
  • The experience of being a councillor; and
  • The electoral process and campaigning including key dates and information provided by the Victorian Electoral Commission.

The session will be facilitated by Municipal Association of Victoria Deputy CEO and General Counsel Alison Lyon, with presentations by Corangamite Shire Chief Executive Officer Andrew Mason, and Colac Otway Shire CEO Peter Brown.
