Electoral Act Reform

Elise Archer,Attorney-General

The Electoral Amendment Bill today passed the Parliament, paving the way to modernise and streamline the electoral process for all Tasmanians.

A significant aspect of this reform is the removal of the election day newspaper coverage ban, which has been widely supported by stakeholders and the broader community.

Importantly, the passing of the legislation provides the opportunity for the ban to be removed ahead of the Legislative Council elections in May.

Further public consultation on the Electoral Act Review’s Interim Report, which deals with broader and more complex aspects of electoral reform, will continue until 15 April 2019, and Tasmanians are encouraged to have their say.
