One of the first Victorian constructed, fully electric, zero emissions buses is being trialled on the 246 route through the heart of the City of Yarra by Transdev Melbourne.
Transdev invited City of Yarra Mayor Councillor Misha Coleman, Councillor Jackie Fristacky, Yarra City Council CEO Vijaya Vaidyanath and staff to visit the Transdev depot to learn more about the trial.
Chief Officer Bus Operations for Transdev Australasia, Ian Craig, shared the Transdev strategy for a future of electric buses travelling throughout Melbourne. As part of the tour the group learnt about the technology behind the buses and the electric charging stations which are located in the North Fitzroy depot. They also took a short bus ride around the local area.
Councillor Coleman said, “We are so pleased that the zero emissions electric bus is being trialled here in Yarra. It is a much more enjoyable experience, quieter for those riding the bus as well as those outside. Electric buses mean less pollution for our Yarra community. It’s a great step forward in helping to address the challenge of climate change.”
Councillor Coleman added, “Yarra Council has been persistent in advocating to the Victorian Government and to public transport operators to achieve more sustainable public transport outcomes. This trial is a positive first step towards achieving this and is a great example of Yarra Council exercising the important role of working with others to achieve great outcomes for our community.”
The trial is being run by Transdev in partnership with the Victorian Government until January 2021. With a 324 kWH lithium phosphate battery, the bus can run for 300 kilometres along Hoddle street before it is due for a recharge.
